Everything about Micro-needling you need to know

October 2, 2018

Micro-needling! Micro-needling! Micro-needling!

The way to our heart.

And, the most popular skincare treatment that everyone is raving about lately – all within good reasoning. Follow along to learn why we can’t get enough of this amazing treatment. ⇩

How it works

Micro-needling is a collagen induction therapy that is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves puncturing the top layer of the skin with tiny sterile needles. The needles create hundreds of puncture wounds, that create pin point needle bleeds in the top layers of the skin.

Don’t freak out!

Doing this, you are stimulating the body’s natural wound healing process, which in return creates new collagen and elastin and promotes increased cellular turnover (new skin cells). The results of Micro-needling are very natural because it’s using the body’s own natural healing mechanisms, triggering the generation of new skin cells.

Micro-needling gives amazing results and is everything you’ve been looking for.

Benefits include:

-Stimulates collagen and elastin production

-Improves fine lines and deeper wrinkles

-Reduces the appearance of pores

-Tightens and firms

-Increases absorption of skincare ingredients such as

peptides, growth factors, vitamin c and hylaronic acid

-Reverses the signs of sun damage

-Reduces Acne and chicken pox scarring

-Evens out tone and texture

-Lightens hyper-pigmentation and sun spots

-Gives a healthy, fresh, new glow for younger looking skin

*For optimal results, we recommend a series of 4-6 treatments and to always pre-treat your skin prior to this treatment. Prepping your skin with a full skincare system that entails products like vitamin A allows the treatment to penetrate deeper into the dermis, giving you even greater results.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is there downtime?

There is some “downtime” with this treatment, however – it’s very minimal, which is why so many people prefer this treatment over chemical peels and lasers. Directly after the treatment you will experience redness and sensitivity that’s very comparable to a mild sunburn. Redness typically will subside within 24 hours post treatment. Scaliness, extreme dryness, flakiness and tightness are all very common side affects and will subside around 4-5 days post treatment.

2. Will it hurt?

We hope not! We do our best to make our patients feel as comfortable as possible by applying a topical numbing cream prior to the treatment. The reaction to the numbing cream varies from person to person depending on their reaction. Typically, areas that have less fat (forehead & jawline) are a little more sensitive, but nothing that’s unbearable.

3. What is the cost / what to look for?

This tends to be the most common question when deciding on a micro-needling treatment and provider. The biggest thing that we always tell our patients is to educate, educate, educate! Just because one provider is offering a cheaper price than another, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s always the smarter choice. I can’t say this enough – know what micro-needling system your provider is using. Results will vary based on the specific device being used, the depth of penetration of the needles and the number of needles the tip has, which also has a lot to do with cost. Some facilities are also using “dermal rollers” which can be used at home, but don’t offer the same results as powered micro-needling devices. Actually, not even close. With that being said, know what needle depth they are using and always ensure that your provider is using an electric operated system as oppose to a battery operated one. This ensures that you are getting the same needle depth throughout your entire treatment. Battery operated devices tend to lose power and depth without fully knowing.

Also, a huge cost factor depends on what products the provider is using before, during and after. At Rejuvenations, we carry pharmaceutical grade product lines and we offer only the best with our micro-needling treatments. Serums should be used during the actual treatment and you want to make sure your provider is using a good water based product.

Aftercare

Clean

Use a gentle cleanser and tepid water to cleanse the face post-treatment. Gently dry the treated skin. Always make sure your hands are clean when touching the treated area, and do not use a Clarisonic or other powered cleansing brushes for at least one week after your treatment.

Heal

We recommend antioxidant serums post-treatment, as its properties are ideal to help heal the skin by soothing and lessening irritation.

Hydrate

Following your micro-needling treatment, your skin may feel a lot drier than normal. Hyaluronic Acid is an ideal ingredient you can use to hydrate and restore the skin back to perfect balance.

Learn more about our favorite Hylaronic Acid here.

Treat

In the days following your micro-needling treatment, and as the skin starts to regenerate, collagen-stimulating peptides are ideal to maximize the effects of the stimulation already started by the micro- needling.

Learn more about our amazing peptide serum here.

Makeup

We recommend you do not apply makeup for 24 to 72 hours after the procedure. In addition, do not apply any makeup with a makeup brush, especially if the brush is not clean.

Protect

We recommend a chemical-free sunscreen. Keep in mind that you should continue to use a sunscreen everyday, not only the days following your procedure, but as part of your skincare routine to protect your skin from sun damage and premature aging

Other aftercare precautions

-To ensure the proper healing environment, do NOT use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula) scrubs or anything perceived as “active” skincare for one week post treatment.

-Do not use any powered cleansing brushes like Clarisonic for one week post treatment.

-Avoid intentional and direct sunlight for 72 hours.

NO TANNING BEDS!! Before. During. After. EVER. Just stop. Please!

-Always wear sunscreen.

-Do not go swimming for at least 72 hours post-treatment.

-Do not exercise or participate in strenuous activity for the first 72 hours post-treatment. Sweating and gym environments in general are harmful and filled with bacteria, which may cause adverse reactions in your skin.
